B) RESEARCH INTERESTS AND CURRENT PROJECTS
Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant that enters the environment through natural and anthropogenic sources. Mercury can travel long distances via air and water; upon deposition in aquatic and land ecosystems, it can be transformed by bacteria into methylmercury (MeHg). Methylmercury bioaccumulates in organisms and biomagnifies in the food web. Therefore, it can build up in the human body and is considered a public health risk. Among various groups worldwide, Aboriginal groups are particularly sensitive to Hg contamination. Traditional food has a significant role in the culture and health of Aboriginal people in Canada.
My research will attempt to raise awareness of safety of traditional foods. This may result in providing better information on assessing Hg exposures associated with consuming a diverse range of traditional foods among Aboriginal communities in Canada.
